When you specify a hoodie, one of the first choices is fabric weight. It affects how the garment feels, hangs and wears, and it also affects cost.
What does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how heavy a fabric is. A higher GSM means a heavier, denser fabric. It is a useful way to compare fabrics, though two fabrics at the same GSM can still feel different depending on the yarn and knit.
Fleece vs French terry
- Fleece: brushed on the inside for a soft, warm feel. A common choice for winter hoodies and a premium look.
- French terry: looped on the inside, smoother and lighter. Good for spring, layering and a drapier feel.
Choosing a weight
Lighter fabrics suit warmer climates and layering. Heavier fabrics feel more substantial and hold a boxy shape, which many streetwear brands prefer. Think about your customer, the season and your price point.
Other things that affect feel
- Fibre content and yarn quality.
- Brushing and finishing.
- Garment wash or pre-shrinking treatments.
- Rib quality at cuffs and hem.
